Cities
look to sea for fresh water
USA Today, Nov. 22, Pg. 3 –
Spiraling demand for water and the threat of drought have officials
in Marin County considering a plant that turns ocean saltwater
into high-quality drinking water. Marin is one of many jurisdictions
across the USA giving desalination a serious look. (Quotes UCSD

A rare
peek into autism
Toronto Star, Nov. 22, Pg. 5 -- Autism
experts are studying Tito Mukhopadhyay, a severely autistic
boy who is able to explain his disorder. UCSD
researchers led by Eric Courchesne imaged the
brains of higher functioning autistic people and found that
autistic people had mixed-up brain maps. Some autistic people
have face-recognition areas in parts of the brain like the frontal
lobes. The same is true of maps that help plan movements.

Should
churches convert drivers of SUVs?
Christian Science Monitor, Nov. 22,
Pg. 2 – Prominent Christian and Jewish leaders called
this week on the auto industry and their own congregations “to
recognize that transportation choices are moral choices”
because of “the extraordinary impact they have on God’s
creation and God’s children.” The coalition launched
what it hopes will be an ongoing conversation on building cleaner
cars. UCSD economist Michelle White
calculated the effect of SUVs and light trucks on traffic safety.
“For every accident involving a fatality that you avoided
by buying a bigger vehicle, you cause 2.5 accidents involving
fatalities for vehicles that you hit,” White said.
