Picking a poison for cancer
Los Angeles Times, Nov. 25 -- UCSD researchers Trevor McMorris, Chemistry and Biochemistry professor emeritus, and UCSD pathologist Michael Kelner, M.D., are testing the chemical toxin derived from the jack-o'-lantern mushroom, irofulven, as a possible therapy for difficult-to-treat cancers, such as advanced ovarian, prostate, breast, liver, gastrointestinal and brain cancers.

Penguin Calamity
New York Times, Nov. 26, Pg. 3 – The emperor penguin colony at Cape Crozier in Antarctica is suffering form a calamity caused by the movement of two huge icebergs near the cape, according to Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers.

Leukemia UCSD cancer researchers develop new antileukemia strategy
NewsRx, Nov. 25 – A UCSD cancer research team led by Edward D. Ball and Rui-Kun Zhong has developed a three-step process in which human leukemia cells and neighboring immune-system T cells are manipulated together in the laboratory to create a powerful and specific cancer-killing cocktail. The details are reported in the October 2002 issue of the journal Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

FEC allows candidates to draw pay for running
Washington Post, Nov. 26, Pg. 1 – The Federal Election Commission voted yesterday to allow challengers in congressional races to pay themselves a salary from their campaign funds, a move designed to enable more people with modest incomes to run for the House and Senate.
