Report calls
for ecosystem focus on fishing management
Associated Press, Oct. 29 –
The U.S. fishing industry is sailing toward disaster unless
the government steps in to create marine preserves, a report
for the Pew Oceans Commission concludes. “The time has
come to reorient fishery management around the goal of protecting
ecosystems and to install flexible management that emphasizes
caution,” study lead author Paul Dayton
of Scripps Institution of Oceanography said
in a statement.

Approval
is seen for Abbott arthritis drug
New York Times, Oct. 29, Pg. 17 –
Abbott Laboratories experimental drug for rheumatoid arthritis,
Humira, proved effective and safe in late-stage clinical trials,
making it a potentially strong competitor to Amgen’s Enbrel
and Johnson & Johnson’s Remicade. Arthur Kavanaugh,
UCSD professor of medicine and investigator
in the trials, found that Humira is generally “comparable”
to Enbrel and Remicade.

Federal
judge finds sound blasts harmful to whales
Associated Press, Oct. 29 –
Magistrate Judge James Larson ordered an immediate end to the
firing of high-intensity sonic blasts into the Gulf of California
because they harm whales. Scripps Institution of Oceanography
scientists estimate the airguns aboard the R/V Maurice Ewing
research vessel can generate up to 263 decibels. Larson noted
that the U.S. Navy considers sounds above 180 decibels to be
potentially harmful to marine mammals.
