The phones light up, not the callers
Los Angeles Times, Oct. 7, Pg. 1 – A UCSD study led by Shu-Hong Zhu, Family and Preventive medicine professor, reported that phone counseling services known as quitlines are as good as the nicotine patch in helping people quit smoking. Research showed those who used a quitline program had a significantly higher probability of long-term success than did those who failed to utilize such a program.

Researchers find new cause for clogged arteries
San Diego Business Journal, Health Care, Sept. 16-22 – UCSD research findings suggest that a protein normally regarded as the immune system’s first-line defense against invading pathogens binds to oxidized bad cholesterol, causing inflammation and cholesterol accumulation. The findings were published Sept. 9 in an online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

CCAT announces homeland defense grants for R&D
San Diego Business Journal, Sept. 16-22 – The Center for Commercialization of Advanced Technology, a joint project of local universities and industry funded by the Department of Defense, announced grant winners. Recipients include UCSD’s Department of Bioengineering under direction of Lanping Amy Sung, UCSD’s Department of Mechanical and aerospace Engineering under the direction of Juan Lasheras and Nathan Delson and UCSD’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering under the direction of Sergei Krasheninnikov to research diffraction optics technology for high-power lasers.

San Dieguito lagoon channel is completed
San Diego Union Tribune, Oct. 5, Pg. 3 – Fish and other aquatic life threatened by stagnant water in San Dieguito Lagoon were rescued yesterday when contractors working for the city of Del Mar finished excavation of a channel linking the wetland to the ocean. Scripps Institution of Oceanography is studying the plume of lagoon water to learn how quickly it is diluted in the surf zone.

Connect, XETV team up for tech coverage
San Diego Business Journal, Sept. 16-22 – UCSD Connect is collaborating with WETV, the local Fox affiliate, to improve new coverage of technology issues. Torrey Pines aces U.S. Open bid; South course to host gem of pro golf in 2008
San Diego Union Tribune, Oct. 5, PG. 1 – The U.S. Golf Association accepted an invitation from the Torrey Pines South Course to stage the 2008 U.S. Open. Torrey Pines will be the second municipal golf layout to host a U.S. Open.
