counseling services known as quitlines are as good as the nicotine
patch in helping people quit smoking. Research showed those
who used a quitline program had a significantly higher probability

Researchers
find new cause for clogged arteries

Care, Sept. 16-22 – UCSD research findings
suggest that a protein normally regarded as the immune system’s
first-line defense against invading pathogens binds to oxidized
bad cholesterol, causing inflammation and cholesterol accumulation.
The findings were published Sept. 9 in an online edition of
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

lagoon channel is completed
San Diego Union Tribune, Oct. 5, Pg.
3 – Fish and other aquatic life threatened by stagnant
water in San Dieguito Lagoon were rescued yesterday when contractors
working for the city of Del Mar finished excavation of a channel
linking the wetland to the ocean. Scripps Institution
of Oceanography is studying the plume of lagoon water
to learn how quickly it is diluted in the surf zone.
