Economists Group: Boost Minimum Wage
CBS News, Oct. 11 -- More than 650 economists, including five winners of the Nobel Prize for Economics, called Wednesday for an increase in the minimum wage, saying the value of the last increase, in 1997, has been "fully eroded." Economists, including Nobel Prize winner Clive Granger of UCSD, said in a statement released Wednesday that the real value of today's federal minimum wage is less than it has been at any time since 1951. Bering Strait Appeared Earlier than Believed
MSNBC, Oct. 12 -- A land bridge between Alaska and Siberia flooded to make the Bering Strait 11,000 years ago, more than 1,000 years earlier than previously thought, U.S. researchers, including scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD, reported on Wednesday. This would have closed off human migration by foot across the bridge 1,000 years earlier, too, the researchers said. More

UCSD Participates in Ambitious Alzheimer's Study
10News, Oct. 11 -- Scientists have embarked on an ambitious study to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease before it robs the brain’s effectiveness. In a UCSD landmark study, participants are undergoing magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, scans and positron emission tomography, or PET, scans so researchers can see changes in a healthy brain and in ones with memory problems and Alzheimer’s disease. Locally, researchers want to see if a series of tests can help predict and monitor the disease. More
