Earthquake
faults may be miles wide
United Press International, Sept. 12 The miles-long
faults which earthquakes rattle may be hundreds to thousands times
wider than thought, according to a report from Yuri Fialko, a
geophysicist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and
colleagues at UCLA. Their findings, published in the journal Science,
may help scientists detect earthquake cycles around the world.

Nicotine
patch may not help, says study

of UCSDs Cancer Prevention and Control Program, and
Elizabeth Gilpin of UCSDs Cancer Center co-authored
a study that reported over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapies
do not help the general population of smokers quit for the long
term. Their study was published in the Journal of the American
Medical Association.

Scripps
research budget to be cut
San Diego Union Tribune, Sept. 13 State budget
cuts will reduce the research budget for Scripps Institution
of Oceanography by $1.3 million. Scripps officials
identify programs that are in jeopardy from the cuts. (Quotes
