Oceanography and Caltech, scientists have discovered
that earthquake faults can move backward, and that rock inside
a fault may be softer and more pliable than surrounding rock.

Carbon-14 discoverer who

professor of chemistry at UCSD. In 1996 he
shared the Enrico Fermi Award, which recognized lifetime achievements
in energy research. He died on August 31 in Santa Barbara. He
