Anthrax gives up its deadly secret to researchers
Reuters, Aug. 29 – A UCSD research team, led by pharmacology professor Mickael Karin, discovered how anthrax bacteria uses one type of white blood cell to evade the rest of the immune system. The findings were published in the journal Science.

Statins’ nerve problems

Nanotechnology creates ideal optical medium
Electronic Engineering Times, Sep. 2 – Since the first demonstration of a negative refractive index material, research groups around the world have been pursuing photonic technologies that appear to break the laws of nature. Purdue University scientists are attempting to reproduce results similar to those shown last year at UCSD using microwave radiation.

How elephants ‘snorkel’
BBC News, Aug. 31 – Elephants have special lung tissue which allows them to “snorkel” underwater, according to UCSD School of Medicine pulmonary physiologist John West. West outlined his theory at the American Physiological Society in San Diego.
