W African elephants ‘separate’ species

Fear of loathing in Kuwait

The science of suffering
San Diego Union Tribune, Sept. 29, Pg. 4 – Tony Yaksh, UCSD anesthesiology professor, is working to understand the mechanism of pain in the human body. Researchers and physicians until recently thought cancer pain was caused by the disease’s attack on part of the body. Studies on bone cancer at UCSD show that because the bone is eroded, the tumor releases local factors that directly activate the nerve. The cancer tumor makes the nerve fire.

Clear vision
San Diego Union Tribune, Sept. 29 – For 10 years, ophthalmologists have been working to develop an artificial, electronic retina that can be implanted in the eyes to restore lost vision. William Freeman, UCSD professor of ophthalmology, said research at UCSD and elsewhere is promising. Help for the heart
San Diego Union Tribune, Sept. 29 – Genetic and device-based technologies developed in San Diego are converging to offer new hope for thousands of patients with heart disease, including heart failure. Ken Chien, director of UCSD’s Institute of Molecular Medicine, and his colleagues announced a new gene therapy earlier this year that targets malfunctioning heart muscle cells.
