UCSD Fifth in Federal R&D Expenditures
North County Times, Sept. 2 -- UCSD ranked fifth among 600 universities in federal research and development expenditures for fiscal 2003-04, up 2 points from seventh in the previous ranking, according to figures from the National Science Foundation. The foundation says that UCSD spent $465.6 million in federal R&D funds in that period. More
Scripps Study Says Ocean Getting Noisier
North County Times, Sept. 2 -- John Hildebrand, a professor of oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD, and two other scientists announced a week ago that they had found, through a Navy-funded sound study conducted off one of the Channel Islands 160 miles west of San Diego, that the North Pacific is 10 times noisier than it was four decades ago. Hildebrand's partners were Sean Wiggins at Scripps and Mark McDonald, a former student who works as a consultant in Colorado. More

Sacramento Bee, Sept. 5 -- As one of the newest members of the California Climate Action Registry, UC Davis is in the midst of calculating its own emissions of greenhouse gases. To date, only two other UC campuses are part of the registry: UCSD, a charter member; and UC Santa Barbara. More
Global Warming Threatens Delta Islands, Water Supply
Contra Costa Times, Sept. 4 -- Warmer temperatures could cause a 1-foot sea level rise in the Delta by 2050, according to a new report by the state Department of Water Resources. Added to severe winter storm conditions, the report finds, this would likely overtop not just Sherman Island, but also Webb Tract and Jersey Island, nearby islands also considered vital to Delta water quality. Scripps, UCSD Team Up
to Hunt for New Antibiotics on Ocean Floor
San Diego Business Journal, Sept. 4 -- Researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD are taking the plunge. They want to see if they can discover antibiotics at the bottom of the ocean that can battle drug-resistant bacteria. The institution, UCSD’s School of Medicine, its Skaggs School of Pharmacy and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry are collaborating to pump up efforts to find new antibiotics, and get them to market. From Despair of Sisters, a House of Hope is Built
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 4 -- Eunime Por Tijuana, a program inspired by two sisters and their struggles, offers hope to infected children and their families. The aim, said founder Rosalva Vasquez, is to create a homey setting where families can both find and offer comfort. Vasquez is a family advocate at the Mother Child and Adolescent HIV Program at UCSD. More
