Jacobses Give Funds for UCSD Fellowship

, Sept. 13 -- Philanthropists Irwin and Joan Jacobs have donated $500,000 to UCSD to enhance San Diego's image in the Pacific Rim by establishing a fellowship for leaders from the Pacific and creating a center for studying Pacific economies. 'Brilliant Innovator' in Ocean Science

, Sept. 12 -- For Fred N. Spiess, probing ocean depths was essentially twofold: building and designing new research tools and leading expeditions that yielded answers to the mysteries of the sea. His pioneering work at UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography was best defined by his key role in 1962 in creating the Floating Instrument Platform to facilitate oceanographic research. More
