The study, led by UCSD psychologist Piotr Winkielman, published in the journal Psychological Science, looked at previous research that found people rated images of standard-looking objects or people as more attractive than variations of these things. Frederic E. Wakeman Jr., 68; Historian Was Expert on China

Wakeman Jr., a retired UC Berkeley expert on Chinese history who helped open China to Western scholars and wrote several books admired for their meticulous research and compelling style, died of cancer Sept. 14 at his home in Lake Oswego, Ore. , Sept. 28 -- In a story yesterday about UCSD's consolidation of medical services, a former Scripps Mercy official said a friend who used to receive eye care at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest must now travel to La Jolla. UCSD officials said that while some specialized eye care is available only at their Shiley Eye Center in La Jolla, the Hillcrest hospital still offers general eye care. More
