Edible Books on Menu for Annual Exhibition & Tea at UCSD’s Geisel Library

March 21, 2007

By Paul K. Mueller

Readers, rev your appetites: the 2007 Edible Book Exhibition & High/Low Tea will take place 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, in the Seuss Room of Geisel Library at UC San Diego.

Members of San Diego Book Arts will exhibit their artist-created, book-related, edible works of art, and the free event is open to the public. Tea and coffee will be served, recipes will be shared, and the “books” will be consumed.

In addition to the tea, the event will include a raffle of artists’ books, prints, and other art-related items.

The idea for an Edible Book Exhibition and High/Low Tea began over a Thanksgiving dinner in 1999, the brainchild of California-based editor and publisher, Judith Hoffberg.  It is now an international tradition, occurring annually in cities around the world during the first week of April.  Past art works have included book-shaped cakes and cookies and letter-press lettuce. Non-edible artists’ books created by San Diego Book Arts members will also be on view.  The “tasteful” event will unite bibliophiles, book artists, and food lovers.

Francis Bacon wrote: “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested…”   Here’s your chance!

Parking at UC San Diego is free on Sundays. For reservations, call 858-534-2533.
