'Now Happening' At University Art
Gallery
Group show of work by up-and-coming artists
pays tribute to founding father of ‘happenings’
By Inga Kiderra
Recent works
by 18 graduating Master of Fine Arts students from the University
of California, San Diego’s Department of Visual Arts are
featured in “Now Happening,” on view on campus at
the University Art Gallery from April 8 through 23.
Dedicated to Professor
Emeritus Allan Kaprow – father of unscripted, interactive
performance pieces known as “happenings,” which
shook the art world in the late 1950s and early ’60s –
the “Now Happening” exhibition opens with a reception
on April 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception includes a walkthrough
and introduction of the artists, beginning at 5 p.m.
Admission to the gallery
is free and open to the public. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday,
11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Reflecting the diversity
of artistic form and expression in UCSD’s Visual Arts
department, the show represents a broad range of media, including
photography, painting, sculpture, installation, video, and digital
media.
The exhibition is
curated by UCSD alumna Alison Gingeras, curator of contemporary
art at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris; Kathleen Stoughton,
director of the University Art Gallery; and UCSD professors
of visual arts Jordan Crandall and Ernest Silva.
The “Now Happening”
artists are: Brad Borevitz, Alex Dragulescu, Rachel Beth Egenhoefer,
Christine Foerster, Katie Herzog, Matt Hope, Malisa Humphrey,
Danny Jauregui, Tara Knight, Simone Lueck, Kimberly Manchester,
Kia Neill, Mark Oliver, Ian Patrick, Kelly Sears, Yudi Sewraj,
Joel Swanson and Sara Takahashi.
The exhibit and catalogue,
to be published in the fall, are supported by the university’s
Division of Arts and Humanities and the Center for the Humanities.
