“SPACED OUT” SO-CAL ART EXHIBITION AT UCSD OCT. 15 – NOV. 15

“Spaced Out: Southern California Vernacular,” an art exhibition held in conjunction with the 18th annual Western Humanities Alliance Conference, will be on display October 15 through November 15 at the University of California, San Diego.

The exhibition will feature a gallery exhibit at the Herbert Marcuse Visual Arts Gallery and site-specific art works throughout the campus. It also will include such events as:

  •          “Fly Back Breast Free,” an October 16 performance of a plus-sized synchronized swimming troupe directed by artist Julie Wyman at the Canyonview Recreation Center at 7 p.m., and

  •          an October 17 slide presentation by The Center for Land Use Interpretation and panel discussion by artists from the show at the Visual Arts Gallery at 2 p.m..

A map and full listing of all “Spaced Out” works and events will be available

throughout the exhibition at the Herbert Marcuse Visual Arts Gallery, located near the UCSD-TV Studios.  All site-specific works will be within walking distance of the Gallery. A reception will take place on Friday, October 15, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For directions to the Gallery, call (619) 260-6921.

“Spaced Out” will focus on how people experience the spatial vernaculars of Southern California. With the exception of UCSD Visual Arts Professors Emeriti Helen and Newton Harrison, all 27 artists in the show are either current students or recent graduates of regional art schools and university art programs.

“Spaced Out” has been organized in conjunction with the Humanities conference and its theme, “Beyond Babel: Common Language, Common Differences, Common Ground.”

Organized by UCSD Visual Arts graduate students Sarah Lewison and Steven Ausbury, the exhibition has been funded by the Intercampus Arts Program of the University of California, the Office of the Dean of Arts and Humanities at UCSD, the UCSD Visual Arts Department, and the Western Humanities Alliance.

“This is a rare opportunity to experience how a younger generation of Southern California artists  is critiquing and re-envisioning the region’s use of  social space,” said Ausbury.

For more information about the exhibition, contact Ausbury or Lewison at (619) 260-6921, or e-mail questions to spacedout_socal@hotmail.com.
