ARTISTS EXHIBITION OPENS APRIL 8 IN THE UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY AT UCSD
New Voices/New Visions:
23 Contemporary Artists will be on view April 9 through May 29, 1999, in the University
Art Gallery at the University of California, San Diego. A reception for the artists and
curators will be held April 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the University Art Gallery. This event
is free and open to the public.
New Voices/New Visions
features the work of 23 contemporary artists nominated by six guest curators from the San
Diego area. The curators are Ellen Fleurov, director of the California Center for the Arts
Museum; Diana Gaston, curator of the Museum of Photographic Arts; Dr. Joseph Monsen,
photography collector; Leah Ollman, art critic and writer; Italo Scanga, UCSD Visual Arts
professor; and Doug Simay, collector and gallery director of Arts College International.
Artists chosen for the
exhibition include Daniel Aksten, Juan Carlos Alom, Ben Anderson, Eve Aschheim, Radcliffe
Bailey, Jeff Brouws, Derrick Buisch, Jim Campbell, Brett Cook-Dizney, St(phane Couturier,
Kim Cridler, Carlos Estrada-Vega, Tristin Lowe, Mariko Mori, Marie Navarre, Han Nguyen,
Michael Norton, Robert ParkeHarrison, Leeanne Schmidt, Fazal Sheikh, Hoang Van-Bui, Chris
Verene, and Martin Whist.
Featured work includes
photography, painting, sculpture, installations, and video art, and ranges from figurative
to abstract, analytical to whimsical. The artists represented examine technology, the
resurgence of abstraction, environmental issues, gender, cultural identity, the urban
landscape, fantasy and documentation.
The Gallery is located
at the west end of Mandeville Center on the UCSD campus. Gallery hours are Tuesday through
Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment for groups of 10 or more. Admission is
