UCDS’s Grove Gallery Gets
Personal with Invitational Jewelry Exhibit
By Jan Jennings
Iron,
wax, plastics, insects – raw materials for jewelry? Perhaps.
Personal Effects, an invitational jewelry exhibition, is on
view through May 28 in Grove Gallery of the Crafts Center complex
at the University of California, San Diego. The exhibit is free
and open to the public.
The exhibition was curated by artist Jay Whaley. Artists exhibiting
works, in addition to Whaley, are Steven Brixner, Jeffery Clancy,
David Clemons, Will Gustwiller, Ayuko Izumi, Mac McCall, Michelle
Ritter, Gloria Rose, Helen Shirk, Lisa Slovis, and Junghyun
Woo.
“Look for unexpected materials including pewter, copper,
iron, plastics, enamel, wax, insects, and even blood, which
are incorporated into the works on display,” says Grove
Gallery director Ron Carlson.
Whaley’s focus in selecting the pieces, according to Carlson,
was to showcase the diverse forms, materials, and concepts that
contemporary jewelry artists are working with today. The exhibition
includes traditional forms and materials, but also those that
demonstrate that jewelry artists are broadening the horizons
of their media, as well as moving from jewelry per se into larger
sculptural forms and vessels.
Grove Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday
and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The Crafts Center is located
on UCSD’s Revelle College campus off Eucalyptus Grove
Lane. Directions and parking information are available at the
Gilman Drive information center at the entrance to the campus.
