Jan Jennings (858) 822-1684 Gaffney succeeds Loni Berry, now chief executive officer of Oakland Performing Arts Charter School, in producing and directorial duties of the theatrical group which recently celebrated its 40th year of operation. “My primary reason for accepting this challenging job is to provide classes, workshops and full performance opportunities for young people living in southeast San Diego,” Gaffney says. “It is important to continue S.E.C.T.’s history of providing arts and education programs through movement, drama, voice, and visual arts activities.” Gaffney will direct a number of single performances of a theatre piece, Lift Every Voice: African American Style, during the February celebration of Black History. This piece will be performed at UCSD Feb. 18, at Southwestern College Feb. 27, and at other venues in Southern California. S.E.C.T.’s spring program of classes will be held at O’Farrell Community School, 6130 Skyline Drive. In addition to S.E.C.T.’s teaching of youth theatre for elementary, middle and senior high school students, Gaffney will offer an Adult Actors Laboratory with sessions on character development, acting techniques, movement, and script analysis. Gaffney received bachelor’s
and master’s degrees from Adelphi University, Garden City, NY, and
a doctorate from Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. He served
as UCSD drama professor 1971 to 1994 when he became an emeritus professor.
He has directed locally, nationally, and internationally. For information
on S.E.C.T., contact Gaffney at (858) 534-1047 or (619) 263-7911.
