PEABODY TRIO
WITH GUEST CLARINETIST CHARLES NEIDICH TO PERFORM APRIL 17 IN MANDEVILLE AUDITORIUM AT
UCSD
The Peabody Trio,
considered one of the leading piano trios in the world, will perform at 8 p.m. April 17 in
Mandeville Auditorium at the University of California, San Diego.
"This group is so
well matched in ability and temperament," writes the Omaha World-Herald,
"that one gets the sense that they are virtually breathing together."
Performing with the
Peabody as special guest musician will be Charles Neidich, a clarinetist who maintains a
solo career and is praised the world over for his performances which "surpass the
limitations of the instrument."
Peabody Trio members are
Violaine Melancon, violin; Thomas Kraines, cello, and Seth Knopp, piano. The April
17 program will include Shulamit Ran: Soliloquy; Dvorak: Piano Trio in E
minor, Opus 90, and Olivier Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time.
"All three are
first-rate instrumentalists, musicians with interesting and well-defined ideas that they
communicate in rigorously built interpretations," writes Quebecs Le Soleil
of the Peabody.
"From the opening
notes it (is) clear that this ensemble (is) not committed to notes on a page, but to a
higher level of interpretation," says the Montgomery County Gazette.
The Peabody Trio won the
Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1989 and since that year has served as the resident
faculty ensemble of the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore where it is active in the
education of young musicians. Trio members are committed to the performance of both
new music and the classics. Their music interpretations range from the works of
Shulamit Ran to those of Haydn.
The ensemble has
performed in concert halls in North America, including those in New York, Washington,
D.C., Chicago, Denver, Indianapolis, Vancouver, Montreal, San Francisco, Boston,
Philadelphia and Seattle, as well as in numerous summer music festivals. The trio
also has toured Japan, and in 1996 made its first appearance in Israel under the auspices
of the first biennale for contemporary music in Tel Aviv.
Guest clarinetist
Neidich divides his time between recitals, orchestra engagements, chamber music concerts
and festival appearances around the world. With the Peabody he will perform
Messiaens Quartet for the End of Time.
A native New Yorker of
Russian and Greek descent, Neidich won the first major clarinet competition in the United
States, the Walter W. Naumburg Competition in 1985, launching him into prominence as a
soloist. His repertoire of more than 200 solo works includes pieces commissioned or
inspired by him, as well as his own transcriptions of vocal and instrumental works.
In addition to
performing, Neidich is a member of the artist faculties of the Juilliard School, the
Manhattan School of Music and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He
also is a visiting professor at the Sibelius Academy in Finland where he teaches, performs
and conducts throughout the year.
