Daniel Wulbert, mathematics professor at the University of California, San Diego has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to conduct research and lecture in southwest India during the 2009-2010 academic year, the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board has announced. He will assist in developing a research and doctoral program in Analysis at Mangalore University.
Wulbert has been provost of Revelle College since 2003 to this July, when he will step down from the post. He chaired the Council of Provosts, 2006-2008, and in the 1990s served as acting Provost of Thurgood Marshall College.
The UC San Diego mathematician is internationally regarded for his publications in Approximation Theory, Banach Space Geometry and Functional Analysis. Previous awards include support from the National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. He delivered the U.N. Singh memorial lecture at the Analysis section of The Centenary Meeting of the Indian Mathematical Society in January 2008 at Pune, India.
Wulbert received his Master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin, and taught at the University of Washington before joining the UC San Diego faculty in 1973.
The late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas introduced legislation that established the Fulbright Program in 1946. Its various programs provide American students and scholars opportunities to study, teach and conduct research abroad. In addition, Fulbright Programs provide grants for students, scholars and teachers from other countries to engage in similar activities in the United States. The Fulbright Program, America’s premier international education exchange program, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
