The University of California, San Diego will be recognized with an honorable mention in the Demands Response/Conservation category of the 2007 Flex Your Power Awards to be presented Saturday in San Francisco.
The awards announcement came from Flex Your Power director Walter McGuire. Flex Your Power is California’s statewide energy efficiency marketing and outreach campaign.
According to John Dilliott, UCSD energy/utilities manager, UCSD is being honored for its response to regional and statewide electrical emergencies by reducing the campus load with three distinct demand response systems.
“UCSD alters management of the centralized chilled water system, maximizes the
combined cycle steam turbine generator and raises thermostat settings campus-wide via its Building Energy Management System,” Dilliott reports.
“Campus-wide e-mail notifications also are sent out to the campus community encouraging voluntary conservation and delaying energy consuming activities until after 7 p.m. When implemented simultaneously, UCSD reduces its electrical demand by approximately 9,500 kW, yielding a total peak energy savings of 25 % of campus load.”
Initiated in 2001, Flex Your Power is a partnership of California's utilities, residents, businesses, institutions, government agencies and nonprofit organizations working to save energy. The campaign includes retail promotions, a comprehensive website, an electronic newsletter, educational materials and advertising. Flex Your Power has received national and international recognition, including an ENERGY STAR Award for excellence.
Primary funding for Flex Your Power comes from the Public Goods Charge as approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).
