Jorge Huerta, professor of theatre at the University of California, San Diego, has been selected to receive the Lifetime Achievement in Educational Theatre Award from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE).

The award will be presented at a ceremony kicking off the annual conference of the ATHE, Regenerations: Theatre and Performance as a Regenerative Force, July 26 in the Napoleon Ballroom of Sheraton New Orleans. ATHE is the largest national academic/professional theatre organization in the country.

Huerta, who also serves as associate chancellor and chief diversity officer at UCSD, is the first Chicano theatre professor and professional to receive this award.

“I am truly honored, which sounds so corny, but this is recognition from my peers and that is really special,” Huerta says.

Huerta arrived at UCSD as a junior professor in 1975 to begin teaching, writing, researching and directing Chicana/o theatre.

He will attend the ceremony in New Orleans to receive his award.
