20 UCSD Assistant Professors
Awarded with Praise and Dollars
for Research and Creative Activities

Twenty assistant professors at the University of California, San Diego will share a total of $360,000 as recipients of the 2008-2009 Hellman Faculty Fellows Awards. The funds will go to support their research and creative activities and to enhance their progress toward tenure.
Recipients in the Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences Divisions and the Jacobs School of Engineering are Gaurav Arya, Nanoengineering; Jan Kleissl, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; Gentry Patrick, Neurobiology; Curt Schurgers, Electrical and Computer Engineering; Jacques Verstraete, Mathematics; Hector Viadiu, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Elina Zuniga, Molecular Biology.
Recipients in the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences Divisions are Morana Alac, Communication; Jeeyang Baum, Political Science; Dennis Childs, Literature; Liam Clancy, Theatre and Dance; Alan Daly, Education Studies; Scott Desposato, Political Science; Ricardo Dominguez, Visual Arts; Catherine Gere, History; Monte Johnson, Philosophy; Dayna Kalleres, Literature; Margaret Loose, Literature; Keith McNeal, Anthropology, and Daniel Widener, History.
Funded by Chris and Warren Hellman, the Hellman Faculty Fellows Awards are given annually to support the research and creative activities of promising assistant professors who show capacity for great distinction in their work.
