DAVID ARTIS NAMED DIRECTOR OF UCSD ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

David Artis, former director of Academic Services at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, Ann Arbor, has been appointed director of Academic Enrichment Programs (AEP) at the University of California, San Diego.

In his new position, Artis will be responsible for providing a wide range of academic support to more than 1,500 UCSD undergraduates in various fields of study. His duties will include enhancing the academic environment for an increasingly diverse student population, and overseeing programs that prepare and encourage students to pursue advanced research degrees, such as Ph.D.’s and M.D.’s.

In addition, Artis will initiate direct communication with underrepresented high school students in San Diego and Imperial Counties regarding the unique graduate school preparation programs UCSD is implementing for new undergraduates.

Experienced at the college level in such areas as improving student academic performance and increasing diversity, Artis earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale University, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University.

He has also managed graduate student retention programs at the University of Michigan’s Rackham School of Graduate Studies, and served as assistant professor of English at the University of Michigan.

David Artis (seated with tie) meets in an academic counseling session with UCSD students (from left to right) Jesus Gonzales, Brian Young, Karla Macias and Joanne Gabot.
