UCSD CHANCELLOR ELECTED TO COUNCIL OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

Robert C. Dynes, chancellor of the University of California, San Diego has been elected to the Council of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The 17-member Council is the governing body responsible to the membership for activities undertaken by the NAS and for its corporate management. Dynes' term as councilor will be for three years. He is one of 12 elected councilors-at-large, in addition to five officers. Dynes has been a member of NAS since 1989 in the field of Applied Physical Sciences.

Established in 1863, during the U.S. Presidency of Abraham Lincoln, the NAS is a private, non-profit society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research and dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare. Election to the academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be conferred upon a scientist or engineer. Currently, there are approximately 1,900 members and 300 foreign associates.
