HISTORY, VISUAL ARTS PROFESSORS University of California, San Diego associate professor of history Takashi Fujitani and associate professor of visual arts Lev Manovich have been granted Guggenheim Fellowships for 2002. Fujitani and Manovich are among 184 artists, scholars, and scientists who were selected from more than 2,800 applicants to receive awards at the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation’s 78th annual United States and Canadian competition. Awards for all recipients total $6,740,000. Guggenheim Foundation president Joel Conarroe, who announced the awards, said that Fellows are appointed on the basis of distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment. Fujitani received bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in history from UC Berkeley. He has been on the UCSD faculty since 1992. Manovich received a master’s degree in experimental psychology from New York University and a doctorate in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester. He joined the UCSD faculty in 1996. Since 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation has granted more than $200 million in fellowships to more than 15,000 individuals.
