UCSD ARCHITECT
NAMED TO PRESTIGIOUS FELLOWSHIP

M. Boone Hellmann, FAIA,
head of Design and Construction at the University of California, San Diego, has been named
a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects, one of the highest honors the AIA
bestows upon a member.
Hellmann joined UCSD in
1985 as an associate architect and was named an assistant vice chancellor in 1988.
He received his degree in architecture from the University of Idaho.
David Crawford,
executive director of the San Diego Chapter, AIA, said that elevation to fellowship not
only recognizes the achievements of the architect as an individual, but also elevates
before the public and the profession a model architect who has made a significant
contribution to architecture and society.
At UCSD, Hellmann has
directed facilities design prescribed in a series of increasingly refined planning
documents that began with the 1989 UCSD Master Plan Study and continues with execution of
various neighborhood planning studies and design guidelines. He has overseen almost
one billion dollars of major capital improvements, and helped the academic mission of UCSD
by establishing a legible framework in which to achieve excellence.
Hellmanns
fellowship was awarded in the category of "ensuring the advancement of the living
standards of people through their improved environment." He will be inducted as
a fellow during the national AIA convention in May. |
