UCSD’S SALLY RIDE, AMATEUR TENNIS PLAYER, PROFESSOR ELECTED TO INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR-ATHLETE HALL OF FAME Amateur tennis player and former astronaut Sally Ride will be inducted into the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame June 23 in Kingston, R.I. Ride is director of the California Space Institute and professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego. Selection is based on athletic, scholarly, and humanitarian accomplishments. Ride was the first American woman in space, serving as a mission specialist on the Challenger Mission STS-7. Her responsibilities included testing a robotic arm which deployed and retrieved satellites, assisting the commander and pilot during ascent, re-entry, and landing and acting as flight engineer. She later flew on another mission accumulating more than 300 hours of space flight. She is an advocate for greater science education and for encouraging young women to study science and math and is the author of three children’s books. According to Daniel E. Doyle Jr., executive director of the Institute for International Sport which administers the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame, the institute’s objective is "to recognize people who contribute in different ways, but with a common denominator of using sport and educational pursuits as their mediums to foster a better world." The Institute for
International Sport is located at the University of Rhode Island at
Kingston. It administers more than 10 international programs that reach
more than 160 countries on six continents. It uses sport and the cultural
