UCSD PROFESSORS IN
SOCIAL SCIENCES HONORED FOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Eleven professors in the
Division of Social Sciences at the University of California, San Diego
have received recognition for their achievements. They are Rebecca
Klatch, Peter H. Irons, Kaare Strom, Andy Kehler, Ron Langacker,
Robert F. Engle, Arend Lijphart, Steven Shapin, David Swinney, Diana
Deutsch, and John T. Wixted.
Sociology Professor Rebecca
Klatch has received multiple honors for her book,
A Generation Divided: The New Left, The New Right, and The 1960s
(1999, UC Press). The book received the 2000 Distinguished Scholarship
Award from the section on Social Movements and Collective Behavior of
the American Sociological Association. The book also was chosen as
Book-of-the-Month by the Freedom Network, a libertarian organization,
and was a finalist for the C. Wright Mills Award given annually by the
Society for the Study of Social Problems.
Klatch received a bachelor's
degree from UC Berkeley and master's and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard
University, all in sociology. She has been on the UCSD faculty since
1992.
Political science
Professor Peter Irons' book, A People's History of the Supreme
Court (1999, Viking; 2000, Penguin), has received a 2000 Silver Gavel
Certificate of Merit from the American Bar Association for its
"contribution to public understanding of law and the legal
system." Irons received a bachelor's degree in sociology from
Antioch College, master's and Ph.D. degrees in political science from
Boston University and a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School. He has
been on the UCSD faculty since 1982.
Political science
Professor Kaare Strom has been elected a Fellow of the Royal
Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. Strom received a bachelor's
degree from Saint Olaf College, and master's and Ph.D. degrees from
Stanford University, all in political science. She also studied at the
University of Oslo, Norway. Strom has been on the UCSD faculty since
1991.
Andrew Kehler, assistant
professor of linguistics, has been awarded two grants in
computational linguistics: one from the National Security Agency for
Leveraging Minimal Training Data to Improve Information Extraction
Performance, and the other from the National Science Foundation for
Multimodal Access to Spatial Data. Kehler received a bachelor's degree
in computer science and engineering from the University of
Pennsylvania and master's and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from
Harvard. He joined the UCSD faculty in March.
Linguistics Professor
Ronald Langacker is principal organizer and chair of the 7th
International Conference on Cognitive Linguistics to be held at UC
Santa Barbara in July, 2001. Langacker received grants from the UCSD
deans of Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as external
conference funding. He earned a bachelor's degree in French and
master's and Ph.D. degrees in linguistics from the University of
Illinois. He has been on the UCSD faculty since 1966.
Professor of Economics Rob
Engle has been named a Fellow of the American Statistical
Association. The designation of Fellow "is a singular honor that
recognizes outstanding individual contributions to the advancement of
statistics." Engle has been a member of the association since
1989. He received a bachelor's degree in physics from Williams College
and a master's in physics and a Ph.D. in economics from Cornell
University. He has been on the UCSD faculty since 1975.
Arend Lijphart, research
professor emeritus in political science, has been named a Phi Beta
Kappa Visiting Scholar for 2000-2001. Lijphart will travel to several
colleges and universities, meet with undergraduates in informal
settings as well as in classroom lectures, and give a major address at
each campus for the entire academic community. The purpose of the
Visiting Scholars program is to enrich the intellectual atmosphere of
institutions which have Phi Beta Kappa chapters and to enable
undergraduates to talk with distinguished scholars of diverse
disciplines. Lijphart, who received a bachelor's degree from Principia
College and master's and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University, is a
former president of the American Political Science Association. He has
been on the UCSD faculty since 1978.
Sociology Professor Steven
Shapin has been awarded the Dingle Prize for the best book, The
Scientific Revolution, to bring the history of science before a wider
audience. The award is given by the British Society for the History of
Science. Shapin received a bachelor's degree in biology from Reed
College and master's and Ph.D. degrees in history and sociology of
science from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been on the UCSD
faculty since 1989.
Psychology Professor David
Swinney has been named an Honorary University Professor at the
University of Queensland, Australia. Swinney has been on the UCSD
faculty since 1992. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology and
a master's degree in language disorders and speech pathology from
Indiana University and a Ph.D. in psycho-linguistics and cognition
from the University of Texas.
Psychology Professor Diana
Deutsch has been named a Fellow of the Division of Applied
Experimental and Engineering Psychology of the American Psychological
Association. She is also a Fellow of the association's Division of
Psychology and the Arts and the General Psychology Division. Deutsch
received a bachelor's degree in psychology, philosophy and physiology
from Oxford University and a Ph.D. in psychology from UCSD. She has
been on the UCSD faculty since 1989.
Psychology Professor John
Wixted is the recipient of the 2000 George A. Miller Award as
co-author of a 1999 paper, Psychophysics of Remembering, that appeared
in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior. The award is
given annually by Division I of the American Psychological Association
for an outstanding journal article in general psychology. Wixted
received a bachelor's degree from UCSD and master's and Ph.D. degrees
from Emory University. He has been on the UCSD faculty since 1988. |
