New Chief of Police at UCSD Brings 32 Years Experience
in Law Enforcement

Orville King, a 32-year veteran in law enforcement who has served in both police and sheriff's departments, has been appointed Chief of Police at the University of California, San Diego. He replaces Maudie Bobbitt who retired earlier this year.

King comes to UCSD from duties as Captain with the Seal Beach Police Department. Prior to that, he served with the Orange County Sheriff's Department for 30 years. He managed all police services at Orange County's John Wayne Airport and was responsible for the Sheriff's Air Support Bureau and Mounted Enforcement Unit.

A native Californian, King brings a broad base of experience in law enforcement to his duties at UCSD. He has worked in patrol, investigation and administration, as well as in developing and directing law enforcement programs.

King received a master's degree in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge. He is a graduate of the California State Command College and the FBI National Academy.

The appointment as UCSD Chief of Police is effective July 1, 2002.
