At the age of 27, Brian Schultz lost his short battle with an aggressive form of cancer. Soon after his death 15 years ago, Schultz’s college and high school friends united to remember the promising young man and raise funds to support the quest for a cure with the establishment of the Brian Schultz Memorial Foundation. On July 25, the foundation’s annual Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic—now in its 14th year—will take place at the Temecula Creek Inn, with proceeds benefiting the Moores UCSD Cancer Center on the University of California, San Diego campus.
“With this tournament, we are able to remember our good friend who had a passion for golf and use his experience to support advancements in the fight against cancer,” said Doug Gans, one of several friends who organize the event each year. “It feels good to be able to support the groundbreaking research underway at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center.”
Proceeds from this year’s event will provide funding to help UC San Diego’s cancer center meet its most urgent needs. Since its founding, the Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic has raised more than $500,000. Proceeds from past tournaments have supported cancer research at local nonprofit cancer research institutes, as well as the Brian Schultz Memorial Scholarship at San Diego State University, where Schultz received his undergraduate degree.
The Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic will begin on July 25 at 10:30 a.m. with registration, a putting contest and a barbeque lunch. The tournament starts at noon, followed by an awards banquet, silent auction and live entertainment. Tickets for the tournament are $195 and include the banquet dinner and a golf shirt. Banquet-only tickets can be purchased for $50. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Space is limited; for details and reservations, please call (858) 822-1390 or visit www.brianschultzfoundation.com.
