A total $57,000 in scholarships was awarded to 43 students for study abroad or graduate study on campus by the Friends of the UC San Diego International Center during the organization’s recent annual dinner.

The scholarships were awarded to 10 graduate students, four medical students and 29 undergraduates.

In making the awards, Ruth Newmark, scholarship committee chair, noted “UCSD’s international outlook, fostered by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, allows for ready cooperation between the Friends of the International Center and the campus--cooperation that dates back to 1975 when the Friends awarded the first scholarship to an Israeli graduate student in the Department of Biology.”

Since then, the Friends of the International Center have provided more than half a million dollars in scholarships for international and study-abroad students.

Undergraduate recipients use the scholarships in three programs: Education Abroad offered by the University of California, Opportunities Abroad through UCSD, or Global seminars led by UCSD faculty. The graduate students come from abroad and are doing advanced work at UC San Diego, or are Americans conducting research abroad.

Funds for the scholarships come from the group’s campus Resale Shop, the Ethnic Dinner series, individuals and UC San Diego offices.

The Friends of the International Center was established in 1973. During ensuing years, members have sponsored a Host Family program, the “Gallery 8” shop which sold handcrafted art, the International Center Cooperative Nursery School and a Foreign Wives Club. The organization continues to offer various social programs which help the families of UCSD’s foreign students and scholars become familiar with the local American scene.

The International Center served 2,267 international students in 2007-08, an increase of nearly five percent from 2006-2007.
