$500+ MILLION RAISED TO DATE FOR ‘THE CAMPAIGN FOR UCSD’

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) today announced that The Campaign for UCSD: Imagine What’s Next has passed the halfway point toward its goal of raising $1 billion in private funding. As of October 14, gifts and pledges to the campaign total $509.2 million, or 50.9 percent of the goal, since the quiet phase began on July 1, 2000. This seven-year fund-raising initiative was launched publicly March 2003 and is scheduled to conclude June 2007.

The campaign seeks to help secure the university’s future by providing a way for alumni, parents and friends to make a lasting contribution and be an integral part of UCSD’s next chapter of growth.

“We are truly fortunate that so many alumni and community members are making the decision to support UCSD’s campaign. This campus was founded with strong community support, and likewise, our extended family will make this ambitious $1 billion goal attainable,” said Acting Chancellor Marsha Chandler. “We’ve reached the halfway mark of the campaign despite the current economic conditions – a remarkable testimony to the generosity of our friends.”

“Passing the halfway mark is an important milestone for this campus,” said Vice Chancellor of External Relations, James M. Langley. “UCSD is fortunate to have so many people believe in the promise of our students and faculty. Our supporters and volunteer leadership have made this milestone possible, and with their continued support, we look forward to meeting the campaign goal by June of 2007.”

Campaign initiatives fall within a framework of five main categories for support:

  • Ensuring educational opportunity and enriching student life through scholarships, fellowships, and student-leadership and student-life initiatives.
$65.6 million raised to date toward $100 million goal
  • Supporting Outstanding faculty by increasing essential funding for endowed chairs, visiting professorships, and recruitment and retention packages.
