‘THE CAMPAIGN
FOR UCSD’ DRIVES
31 PERCENT INCREASE IN PRIVATE SUPPORT
The University
of California, San Diego (UCSD) today announced its most successful
fund-raising efforts in three years with total private support for
fiscal year 2002-2003 amounting to $131.1 million. The 31 percent
boost over last year’s total is attributed to the March 15
public launch of a $1 billion fund-raising initiative, The Campaign
for UCSD: Imagine What’s Next.
This is the fifth-consecutive year UCSD has surpassed the $100 million
mark and is the second most successful year in private support in
the history of the campus (In fiscal year 1999-2000, the campus
received $135 million in private support). The fiscal year begins
on July 1 and concludes on June 30.
“UCSD is truly fortunate to receive such critically important
and generous gifts from so many friends,” said Chancellor
Robert C. Dynes. “The interest and support of our community
has fueled the success of this campus; it is thrilling to see that
so many of our alumni and San Diego community leaders have such
a strong belief in the future of UCSD.”
Highlights among the private support received during 2002-2003 are:
-
A $25
million gift, a portion of a $110 million planned gift announced
in March 2003, to the Jacobs School of Engineering from Joan
and Irwin Jacobs. The Jacobs’ bequest intention is the
largest private gift in UCSD’s history.
- An $8 million in-kind
gift from the Stuart Foundation. The gift consists of nine of
the Stuart Collection’s fifteen pieces of site-specific
art displayed throughout the campus. The entire collection has
been donated to UCSD during the past 22 years.
- A $5 million gift from
Roberta and Malin Burnham, for the construction and operation
of the School of Management. The gift is the largest to-date for
the school and is to be used at the Dean’s discretion.
- Other leadership gifts
include a $2 million gift from the Walton Family Foundation towards
the construction of the Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center;
a $2 million gift from W. Joseph and Brigitte Blood to support
UCSD health sciences; a $1 million gift from the Charles H. and
Anna S. Stern Foundation to the Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer
Center and an $800,000 gift to the Charles H. and Anna S. Stern
Endowed Fund in Psoriasis Research in the Department of Medicine;
a $1.5 million gift from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to the
Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies
(IR/PS); a $1.5 gift from Sally McMurray for unrestricted support
of the school of medicine; a $1.5 million anonymous gift to the
UCSD Cardiovascular Center; a $1 million gift from Bettie P. Cody
to endow a fellowship for first year graduate students at Scripps
Institution of Oceanography; a $1 million gift from Audrey Geisel
towards the expansion of the Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Club;
and a $1 million gift from Mark and Rebecca Pine to be used at
the discretion of the UCSD Chancellor.
- Also, in 2003, the campus
established the Jerome S. Katzin Chair in Corporate Governance,
which is UCSD’s 100th endowed chair. The Katzin Chair was
established through support from QUALCOMM Incorporated.
On March 15, 2003, the
campus publicly launched The Campaign for UCSD: Imagine What’s
Next, which had been in a quiet phase since July of 2000. The campaign
total was $485.6 million as of June 30, 2003.
Campaign initiatives fall within a framework of five main categories
for support:

opportunity and enriching student life $61.9 million raised by
June 30 towards $100 million goal.

faculty $34.9 million raised by June 30 towards $100 million goal
