Black History Luncheon at UC San Diego
to Celebrate Diversity, Equality, Unity

February 3, 2009

By Jan Jennings

Our History Then and Now: A Celebration of Diversity, Equality, and Unity is the theme for the Black History Luncheon at the University of California, San Diego. The event will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at Revelle College’s Plaza Café.

Sponsored by UC San Diego Housing/Dining/Hospitality, the 12th annual luncheon will feature soul food, musical performances, dance, and the spoken word.

“This year’s theme focuses on the diversity and richness of black culture and history in America,” says Davell Jackson-Brown, conference services operations manager. “The evolution of black history is inextricably tied with the history of all Americans, and this event rejoices in the fact that all Americans are approaching the dawn of a new time, united.”

The Plaza Café kitchen will offer home-cooked soul food with prices ranging from a la carte items for $1.85 to full entrées for $7:95. Luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Entertainment will include performances by the Redeemed Gospel Group, the San Diego Civic Dance Company, the Positive Self Image step dancers, and the spoken word by Darlene V. Willis, Ph.D. The entertainment is free. Both luncheon and entertainment are open to the public.

For further information, including detailed menu items, performers’ bios, photos, and driving and parking directions, visit the Black History Luncheon web site at or contact Jackson-Brown at (858) 534-0236.
