A multi-media exhibition, Reversing the Lens: Representations of Women in Art will be on view March 2-13 in the Cross-Cultural Center at the University of California, San Diego. A reception for the artists will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. March 6. Both events are free and open to the public.
Reversing the Lens is part of UC San Diego’s National Women’s History Month celebrated each March.
“Throughout history, women have been objectified, commoditized, and hyper sexualized in art works, rendered as objects to be gazed at by typically male viewers,” says Paola Rodelas, exhibition curator and Cross-Cultural Center diversity peer educator. “The purpose of this exhibition is to give women artists the opportunity to ‘reverse the lens,’ so to speak, and give them the opportunity to represent themselves.”
The exhibition will include 25 works in varying media, each embodying the theme of female empowerment. For further information on the exhibition, contact Rodelas at paolarodelas@gmail.com or call the Cross-Cultural Center at (858) 534-9689.
