The Muir College Musical Ensemble at the University of California, San Diego will perform Cabaret at 8 p.m. April 12, 13, and 14 in Mandeville Auditorium on the UCSD campus. Muir College senior Noelle Goodman-Morris directs.
The Muir College Musical Ensemble is entering its 15th season of producing one major musical each year. It is the only completely student produced and performed musical on the UCSD campus and is comprised of undergraduate students representing all six campuses. The cast of actors and actresses is supported by a 20-piece orchestra and a production team of 20.
Cabaret tells the story of an American singer/dancer in Weimar Republic era Berlin, 1929-1930s, who romances two men, one a bisexual and the other a wealthy playboy. The setting is the Kit Kat Club, a downtown nightclub where anything goes on stage. Off stage is a seedy hotspot for the rising Nazi Party. Liza Minnelli played the lead role of the American singer in the 1972 film, Cabaret. Cabaret is based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood.
Last year’s production, Once Upon a Mattress, also was directed by Noelle Goodman-Morris. Cabaret is her second directing credit for the Muir musical. Previous Muir musicals have included Little Shop of Horrors, Pippin, Sunday in the Park with George, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Into the Woods and Hair.
The performance is funded by UCSD Associated Students, Muir College Council, Muir Parents Fund, founding Muir Provost John L. Stewart’s Humanities Fund, Council of Provosts, and all six colleges.
Tickets are available at the UCSD Box Office, the Muir College Center and at the door. General admission is $10; faculty and staff, $9, and students, $7. For further information call (858) 534-3587.
