More than 15,000 freshmen who have been admitted to the University of California, San Diego, and their families are expected on the campus April 12 to sample undergraduate life through presentations, visits to undergraduate colleges, talks with students and faculty and campus tours.
The annual “Admit Day” showcases the UC San Diego campus, its academic departments, services and student organizations during the students’ important college decision-making period.
Each of the six undergraduate colleges will host guests in overview sessions designed to introduce their varying philosophies, academic programs, and extracurricular opportunities. Special activities range from a walking tour to La Jolla cliffs led by John Muir College students to a Cultural Celebration featuring local artisans, merchants and food vendors sponsored by Thurgood Marshall College. One college offers an overview session in Spanish while another offers a first-generation college student session.
The 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. event opens with a series of welcome sessions led by Mae Brown, assistant vice chancellor of Admissions and Enrollment Services. Chancellor Marye Anne Fox; Penny Rue, vice chancellor of Student Affairs, and Barbara Sawrey, associate vice chancellor, undergraduate education, will deliver the University welcome.
Campus and residence hall tours will be held throughout the day, as well as tours of sports facilities and various academic departments. Prospective students can meet representatives from student support services and student organizations at an Information Fair along Library Walk. Ongoing information sessions in Center Hall will cover housing and dining services, money matters, academic majors, athletics and campus life.
Faculty members from a number of departments will discuss academic expectations, ways that students and faculty can interact, and opportunities for student involvement in faculty research.
