The University of California, San Diego will again visit cities around the nation as part of its fourth annual UCSD Near You tour, which begins its journey on April 3 in Orange County, California.  The innovative program brings UC San Diego’s outstanding faculty and alumni speakers to network with fellow alums, parents and friends around the country.  As part of the events, speakers share the path-breaking university research and substantial accomplishments that are making news headlines for their local impact, national influence and global reach.

The fourth annual UCSD Near You tour will make stops this spring in Orange County, New York City, Seattle and San Diego.  The fall program will feature events in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles.  To date, more than 600 alumni who began their futures at UC San Diego have reconnected with the university through the program.

UCSD Near You helps keep our alumni throughout the country informed of UC San Diego’s exciting news and research breakthroughs,” notes Armin Afsahi, assistant vice chancellor of the UCSD Alumni Association. “The program offers a great opportunity for alumni who have moved away from San Diego to reconnect with the university and fellow UC San Diego graduates who reside in their same regions.”

UCSD Near You will make a stop on its national tour in San Diego on May 13 with a discussion of “The U.S. Falling Behind: The New Crisis in Science and Math Education,” with Mark Theimens, Ph.D., dean of the UC San Diego Division of Physical Sciences.  Other topics discussed by featured speakers during the spring portion of the tour include:

  • “Card Counting … Down to a Science,” by international authority in mathematics Jeffrey Remmel, Ph.D., who serves as a professor at UC San Diego as well as associate dean of the university’s Division of Physical Sciences
  • The Road to Stockholm,” shared by Nobel Laureates Robert F. Engle, Ph.D., a research professor at UC San Diego and professor of finance at New York University, and Sir Clive W.J. Granger, Ph.D., also a UC San Diego research professor.
  • “Superhero Science: How Biology Can Save the World” will be discussed by Steve Kay, Ph.D., the renowned biologist and dean of UC San Diego’s Division of Biological Sciences.

UC San Diego alumni, parents and the general public are invited to attend the events, which costs $10 for members of all UC alumni associations and $15 for others.  For more information or to register, please visit www.ucsdnearyou.ucsd.edu or call (858) 534-3900.
