Ceremonies at UC San Diego
to See Diplomas Awarded to Some 5,000 Students

A total 6,297 students are scheduled to receive diplomas during 11 separate graduation ceremonies to be held at the University of California, San Diego June 2 to June 18. More than 50,000 family members and guests are expected to attend.
The first of the commencements will be held by the Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 2 in the Pharmaceutical Science Building. Twenty-three graduates will receive their Pharm.D. degrees before some 700 guests. J. Lyle Bootman, dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Arizona, will be guest speaker.

School of Medicine to Graduate 104 New Physicians
Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Class to Graduate on June 2
The UCSD School of Medicine will confer M.D. degrees on 101 graduates and joint M.D./Ph.D.s on three classmates during 11 a.m. ceremonies Sunday, June 3, on the School’s east lawn. David Satcher, M.D., 16th Surgeon General of the U.S. and former Assistant Secretary for Health, is the commencement speaker.
The first of three ceremonies scheduled for Saturday, June 16, will be held by Muir College at 8:30 a.m. in the North Campus Recreation Area (NCRA). Some 1,000 graduates and 9,000 guests will assemble to hear Keef Ryan Hamm, a Muir student who also will be completing 10 years of Navy service on his graduation date, give the commencement address.
International Relations/Pacific Studies Graduate School will honor its 110 graduates during 11 a.m. rites June 16 in the Institute of the Americas Plaza. Guest speaker will be Kazumasa Kusaka, former vice-minister of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and executive advisor to Dentsu Inc.
Television, stage and screen actor James Avery, a UCSD graduate most recently appearing on the Old Globe stage in August Wilson’s “Two Trains Running,” will be the guest speaker at 2 p.m. ceremonies June 16 for 1,020 graduates of Thurgood Marshall College. Nearly 10,000 guests are expected to attend the ceremony on the NCRA field.
Leading off four ceremonies slated Sunday, June 17, is the Warren College graduation at 8:30 a.m. during which Hollywood producer Thom Sherman, a Warren alumnus, will give the commencement address. A total 1,150 graduates and 9,000 guests are expected for the early morning ceremony on the NCRA field.
UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox will be commencement speaker at the 11 a.m. June 17 rites for the Graduate Division, as well as attend all other UCSD ceremonies. More than 199 graduates are expected to receive advanced degrees in front of 3,000 guests.
Eleanor Roosevelt College will hold its graduation at 2 p.m. June 17 on the NCRA field, with 6,000 attendees expected to see 650 graduates receive their diplomas. Student Joelle Rosser will give one commencement talk and Michael Shillington and Ivy Dulay will team up for another.
UCSD history professor Sarah Schneewind will give the commencement speech at 5 p.m. ceremonies June 17 on the NCRA field for some 399 graduates of Sixth College and their 3,500 guests.
And UCSD history professor Stephen Cox has been selected by Revelle College to give the graduation address at 11 a.m. Monday, June 18, on the NCRA field for 837graduates and 8,000 guests.
Winding up the commencement series, philanthropist Michael Milken, chairman of the Milken Institute and head of FasterCures, a Washington-based think-tank that works to remove barriers to progress against life-threatening disease, will speak at 2 p.m. June 18 in Otterson Hall to 58 graduates of the Rady School of Management.
