Groundbreaking ceremonies for “The Village at Torrey Pines,” the second phase of a housing project designed especially for transfer students, will be held at 11:30 a.m. May 29 at the University of California, San Diego.
The project includes the construction of seven buildings totaling more than 266,000 gross square feet adjacent to the first phase of “The Village at Torrey Pines,” which is scheduled to receive its first transfer students this fall. In addition to student living units, the phase two project includes administrative offices, conference facilities, a small bistro/café, market, laundry and other ancillary spaces. Construction is expected to be completed in June, 2011.
The groundbreaking will feature remarks by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox; Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Penny Rue; Mark Cunningham, director of Housing and Dining Services; Molly Hansen, Transfer Student Association, and Michael Johnson, design principal, Carrier Johnson.
Cunningham said the project will provide 805 additional beds on campus, bringing the total to nearly 1,900 beds fully dedicated to supporting transfer students. This reflects the largest commitment of beds specifically for transfer students in the UC system, he said, and probably one of the largest in the country. “It brings us one step closer to our goal of housing at least 50 percent of our students on campus,” he noted.
The project will also be green-certified, he said. “The goal from design to occupancy is to make the project as sustainable as possible to lessen our impact on the environment.”
One bonus to these eco-friendly resident homes with their modern amenities and sleek design aesthetics-- many even have ocean views!
