They’re heading for Vassar, Harvard, Columbia and all the UC’s, among many prestigious universities. They’re 78 members of The Preuss School at UCSD’s 2007 commencement class—and all first members of their families to be going off to colleges.

Graduation ceremonies for the Preuss seniors will be held at 4 p.m. June 28 on the school’s Manchester Field. Guests will be greeted by students extending “welcome” in 11 languages, including Spanish, Cantonese, Greek, Thai, Tigrynia, Tagalog, Mandarin, French, Vietnamese, Cambodian and English.

The valedictorian address will be given by Rose Ann Cao, and the salutatorian address by Hieu Duy Tran. Other student participants on the program include Monika Langarica, Associated Student Body president, and Marlene Lleva, senior class president.

Welcoming the parents will be Doris Alvarez, principal; Cecil Lytle, chair of The Preuss School Board; David R. Miller, UCSD Associate Vice Chancellor, and Mitz Lee, San Diego Unified School District Board of Education trustee.

In addition to Vassar, Harvard and Columbia, other members will attend Duke, USC,  University of San Diego, UCSD, UC Riverside, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and San Diego State.

The Preuss School, recently named by Newsweek among the top 10 high schools in the U.S., is a middle and high school dedicated to providing a single-track, college preparatory education for motivated low-income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college.
