2008 Graduation at UCSD Set for June 21-22

Because of circumstances surrounding the U.S. Open golf tournament to be held at Torrey Pines Golf Course June 9-15, 2008, commencement ceremonies for the six undergraduate colleges at the University of California, San Diego, have been scheduled for the following weekend, June 21-22.

The undergraduate colleges will announce times for individual college ceremonies within the next several months. Parents wishing to make hotel reservations for the June 21-22 dates should find them available.

Officials have noted that the Open event, expected to attract 60,000 attendees, plus the possibility of the popular San Diego County Fair at Del Mar the same week, will combine for heavy congestion in the UCSD area. University officials were concerned that the surge in vehicle and pedestrian traffic would put an unintended strain on students and their families celebrating commencement. Hotels in the area are already reserved for the June 9-15 period.

UCSD normally schedules graduations the second week in June immediately following finals.
