UC San Diego Family Weekend
Offers Diverse Activities

A visit to the Birch Aquarium. Faculty lectures. A Green Eggs and Ham Brunch. A concert in the new Music Center. Comedy Night at the Loft.

Those are among colorful and thought-provoking options available to families as they begin registration Sept. 2 for the second annual Family Weekend at UC San Diego, Oct. 23-25, 2009.

Family Weekend, held annually on all 10 UC campuses, is intended as a warm and fun-filled welcome for new students, their parents and their families, as well as an embrace for returning students and families. A snapshot of offerings at UC San Diego’s weekend
includes:

• Oct. 23: The Chancellor’s Challenge 5K run/walk along tree-shaded campus paths to benefit undergraduate scholarships, faculty lecture/discussions, and Family Comedy Night at The Loft.
• Oct. 24: Connecting with staff and faculty at the six undergraduate colleges, family photos in front of the iconic Stuart Collection public sculptures, a concert at the Conrad Prebys Music Center, a workout at the campus RIMAC gym, and a play at the internationally famous La Jolla Playhouse.
• Oct. 25: A “Green Eggs and Ham brunch” at the Faculty Club hosted by Parent and Family Giving, and an ArtPower! performance by the Emerson String Quartet in the new Conrad Prebys Music Center.

Cara Appel-Silbaugh, director of Parent and Family Programs in UC San Diego’s Student Affairs division, said more than 800 parents, grandparents, guardians and other family members are expected to attend. “The weekend allows families to reconnect with students and to begin their own UC San Diego family traditions,” she said. “It’s a time when participants can really explore and take advantage of all the campus has to offer…a time to just enjoy and have fun with the UC San Diego community.”
