UC San Diego’s Career Services Center
to Help Students, Alumni amid Economic Crisis

October 10, 2008

By Christine Clark

Amid the current economic crisis, UC San Diego’s Career Services Center will dedicate a week to help students who are seeking careers in the business and financial sectors.

Business Week, Oct. 13-17, will feature a series of workshops where students will receive advice from representatives of Morgan Stanley, Bainbridge and other financial service and consulting companies. Additional events range from résumé marathons to speed interviewing and even an industry networking night.

“The representatives will address the current economic crisis and how it will impact the job market for the next couple of years,” said Craig Schmidt, associate director of the Career Services Center. “The professionals will talk to students about recent events and trends in the industry, so their discussions will be very current.”

The week is tailored to students interested in careers in accounting, banking, consulting, finance, or the government sector. UC San Diego student groups such as the Financial Management Association, Investment Banking Honor Society and the Undergraduate Economics Society helped organize the week’s events.

“It’s a difficult job market and the interview workshops offered during Business Week can help students distinguish themselves from other candidates,” senior Anthony Yeung said. Yeung, an economics major and member of the Undergraduate Economics Society, helped plan Business Week events.

Events include:

  • Careers in Business & Market Trends: Oct. 13, 6:30-8 p.m. A panel of professionals will discuss career trends and offer tips on breaking into the business sector.
  • Resume Marathon: Oct. 14, 2-4 p.m. Industry experts will help students polish their resumes and teach them how to make them more effective in today’s job market.
  • Inverse Interviewing: Oct. 14, 5-6:30 p.m. Students will learn from a panel of recruiters how to answer a variety of interview questions. They’ll also turn the tables and interview the recruiters to hear examples of strong responses.
  • Speed Interviewing: Oct. 15, 6-8 p.m. Students will rotate from recruiter to recruiter to practice interview questions before five-minute buzzer sounds.
  • Professional and Graduate School Information Fair: Oct. 15, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Admissions officers from graduate schools will present information about admissions criteria and curriculums for various MBA programs.
  • MBA: Preparing for & Applying to Business School: Oct. 16, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Students can learn how to apply to MBA programs and prepare for the GMAT.
  • Industry Networking Night: Oct. 16, 6-8 p.m. More than 20 industry professionals from business-related sectors including investment banking, management consulting and corporate finance will talk to some 150 students about the state of the industry and opportunities in their firms.
  • Navigating Job Offers & Salary Negotiation: Oct. 17, noon-1 p.m. This workshop will help students identify and answer the questions that may come up when negotiating job offers.

The Career Services Center offers a wide range of programs and services to help UC San Diego students and alumni seeking new job opportunities, changing careers or considering graduate school.
