Incendiary Art, an exhibition of diverse and innovative works in varying media by members of the faculty at the Crafts Center at the University of California, San Diego, is on view through Nov. 18 in UCSD’s Grove Gallery. A reception for the artists will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 21. The exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public.

Art work born of fire is the theme for the exhibition. Gallery director Ron Carlson envisioned the continuous motif of fire running through the exhibit and individualized by the different interpretations and skills. This common tie of fire, according to Carlson, not only represents the aesthetic and the process of creating art at the Crafts Center, but also the cohesion of the faculty.

In keeping with the Halloween season, Kathleen Mitchell has created Gates of Hell guarded by two hellhounds and macabre glass skulls which greet the Grove Gallery visitor. Mitchell’s media consists of barbed metal and cyclonic flames of glass.

Among other instructors exhibiting works are Reiko Campbell, Izzy Elizondo, Minako Lee, Barrett Jackson, Isamu Kawaguchi, Paul Linsley, Brett Crawford, Dee Dee Coppedge, Dan McMullin, Barry Pechersky, and Hiroko Mukasa, ceramics; Tom Fox and Nicole Deline, metal; Teresa Soito, Mark Rudak, Nancy Nagel, and Joyce Rooks, lampwork; Steven Burns, Pat MacGillis, Toru Nakatani, Lucy Wang, Rebecca Smith, and Larissa Gorikh, graphics; Carlson, Buzz Blodgett, Clay Logan, and Patty Yockey, glass; Jay Whaley, pastel drawing, and Robin Pryzbysz, Christie Dunning, and Bret Daniel, other media.

Incendiary Arts is on view in UCSD’s Grove Gallery from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through Nov. 18. Grove Gallery is located in the UCSD Crafts Center Complex on the Revelle College campus off Eucalyptus Grove Lane.
