This has been both a trying and a triumphant day for many members of our campus community. After another hurtful incident was reported this morning, hundreds of students, staff and faculty rallied outside my office and also occupied it for a number of hours. They spent the day expressing their emotions and learning from each other, and I encourage this open dialogue. They left on their own volition.

A student has come forward and admitted responsibility for this morning’s incident because of pressure from our UC San Diego community. This underscores the fact that our university is banding together. The police are investigating this matter and I have suspended the student. We will not tolerate hate on our campus.

Today, I met again with student leaders and responded to a list of recommendations from the Black Student Union. You can read the actions we’ve taken at battlehate.ucsd.edu.
