In the fall of 1988, the first class of 390 students launched the University of California, San Diego’s “Fifth College” as the newest in its expanding constellation of undergraduate colleges.
Next week, the 20th class of some 3,700 students will mark the anniversary of the college—renamed Eleanor Roosevelt College in 1994—with events ranging from a progressive dinner to a Model United Nations conference.
A “State Dinner” Oct. 11 in honor of Eleanor Roosevelt’s birthdaywill feature an appearance by award-winning actress and director Rosina Reynolds performing her one-woman monologue about Eleanor Roosevelt. Preceding her appearance, a dinner reminiscent of the Roosevelt era will be served to students costumed as international delegates.
Meanwhile, on Oct. 11 and 12, the UC San Diego Model United Nations will host a Model United Nations Conference for high school students from throughout San Diego County. Theme of the conference is “Restoring Faith in the United Nations.”
Other activities planned for Eleanor Roosevelt College Week include a progressive dinner in which the residence halls host global menu items such as Swedish meatballs, sushi or street tacos; reading discussions in the residence hall dorms of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and a “Night of 1000 Cranes” during which students will learn to fold paper cranes using the Japanese art of origami. The finished cranes will be used to decorate the State Dinner and then sent to the Children’s Peace Memorial in Hiroshima.
