December 16, 2008

The Preuss School at UC San Diego is one of 200 California schools selected for the 2008-09 Title 1 Academic Achievement Award, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell has announced.

In a personal call to Preuss School Principal Scott Barton, O’Connell said “Preuss and other awardees have addressed barriers to student success and were able to create a school environment conducive to learning.”

The Title 1 Academic Achievement Award is given only to schools receiving federal Title 1 funds as authorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. To be eligible for the Title 1 Schoolwide Program, a school must enroll 40 percent or more of socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Fifteen other schools in San Diego County received the achievement award this year.

The Preuss School is a middle and high school dedicated to providing an intensive college preparatory education for motivated low-income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college. The school is jointly chartered by the San Diego Unified School District and the University of California, San Diego.
