The Preuss School at the University of California, San Diego has been named 8th among the nation’s “best high schools” by U.S. News & World Report in its annual survey of 21,000 public high schools. The new ranking is up from the school’s 10th place spot in the 2007 listing.
Additionally, The Preuss School ranked 2nd in a separate analysis of the nation’s “Top Charter High Schools,” behind Pacific Collegiate Charter in Santa Cruz, Ca.
Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Va., was ranked first in the “best high schools” with a college readiness score of 100. The Preuss School, at 8th rank, had a score of 97.1.
The magazine’s editors said that high schools in 48 states were put through a three-step analysis, and the top 100 listed as Gold Medal winners. To produce the rankings, U.S. News teamed with School Evaluation Services (SES), a K-12 education data research business run by Standard & Poor’s. SES developed the comprehensive methodology that evaluates how well high schools serve all their students, not just those who are college bound.
Scott Barton, Preuss School principal, noted “the new ranking reinforces the success of our students and the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff. The fact that our graduating seniors continue to be accepted to colleges and universities at a rate of more than 90 percent is supported by our high national rankings in major news publications.” Earlier this year, The Preuss School was ranked 6th among the nation’s best high schools by Newsweek magazine.
The Preuss School is a middle and high school dedicated to providing intensive college prep education for motivated low income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college. The school is jointly chartered by UC San Diego and the San Diego School District.
The University of California, San Diego is one of the nation’s most accomplished research universities, widely acknowledged for its local impact, national influence and global reach.
